my stepson is eigthteen now we've been living together for 12yrs but i have never been able to get on i have 4 other children with my stepsons mum,now we are on the verge of seperation because of my relationship with my stepson. how can i turn things around as i do not want us to seperate.

does he not have other family he could stay with for awhile for things to calm down a bit.
you dont say what the problems are, but surely after 12 years ,4 children and the fact he was only 6 when you moved in is enough to keep your family together.
have you tried relate or some other kind of councelling?

In the early days of your relationship with your young stepson, it was your responsibility as the adult to get on with him. You should have done everything within your power ...and more ...to ensure that you built a strong and respectful relationship together. That being said, this is an impossible question to answer in the here and now, as you do not say what is happening in your life together. My only thought would be for you and your stepson to go somewhere together for a weekend, on your own ..maybe camping and just walk and talk, about everything or nothing. This would be a starting point and maybe progress could be made if you both try to be honest and not just 'right.'

Surely your stepson will be moving out or going to Uni soon?
Once he's not constantly around maybe the two of you will find it easier to get on?

My brother and my stepdad never got on, they just tolerated each other, maybe you both have to realise that your never gonna be mates and just learn to tolerate each other as well. Dont let your relashionship end over a son that will be probally moving out within the next few years.
