The opposite side from the drivee - left for baby if you are driving a right-hand-drive car, and vice versa if not. This means you can see baby in your mirror, and you can turn easily to attend to baby without straining anything.
Maybe even opposite side of the driver!
In the middle of the back seat is the most protected.  Also, if you have side airbags, either side is definitely not safe.
Another reason to put it on the pavement side (left in the UK). If you are parked at the roadside, you don't have to stand in the road to get the baby in and out.
whatever side you feel comfortable with - bear in mind that you are not supposed to turn around and attend a child while driving and your mirrors are supposed to be used for keeping an eye on other vehicles and possible dangers.  There are a great many gadgets available these days to help with children in cars look into them and both you and your children will be safe.

behind the driver, u have to concentrate on driving and if straped in and comfortable the baby will be fine, if u are distracted or reaching over while driving u are more likely to be involved in a smash and i am sure baby can handle a favourite toy or dummy drop on the floor far easier than a volvo truck sat on his lap.

if long journies then take several breaks after short periods of driving to check the comfort of the baby and to reassure them and if possible have a passenger to help look after him,

If u are concerned to the point of whether u are able to look after him properly while driving then is the journey neccesary and if so are there no forms of public transport available to allow u complete freedom to attend his needs fully?

I got the local road safety officer round about our baby seat when our daughter was younger and she recommended the opposite side from the driver. She also showed us that the seat we had wasn't really compatible with my car although it was fine with my wifes. You can call the local police and speak to the road safety officer and get them round. It's really worthwhile.
