You only need to be a library card holder and you're away, no need to subscribe and it will be sufficient to get you started.
You can use the 1911 census (see my thread in the genealogy sub-section under the history topic)/
familysearch.org is the free site from the LDS church that includes the IGI, an index started in the 1950s that lists baptisma and marriages from mainly anglican churches from 1537 to the 1920s. also on there is the index to the 1881 census.
hope that gets you started, use the genealogical sub section to ask any research questions you have.

You can use FreeBMD to search the birth, marriage and death indexes from 1827 to c1930ish - http://www.freebmd.org.uk
You can join and use Roots Chat for free where you can ask for advice and for lookups if you can't afford to subscribe to other sites.

You can also try the Mormon web site at
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
where you can download a FREE excellent Fam Hist program called Personal Ancestral file (PAF) to keep your records.
They have been keeping family records gong back to the 1500 so they have quite a lot of info in their I.G.I. files.
You will have to start with your own closest family members and work backwards.
B.M.D. certificates cost about 7.00 each but can point you to the next lead backwards i.e. Parents, addresses and occupations are listed on Birth certificates.
