Don't buy Glenfiddich it's a waste of money, it is horrible, the last sample my doctor took had more character.
Problem is finding something to his taste, if the last was too heavy, avoid island malts they are heavily peated whiskys (I love em) they are not for girls ;-). Jura is nice as are a lot of the lowlands and highland malts. Speysides are for girls unless they are more than 20 years old.
Glenmorangie is a nice drinking whisky, bags of flavour but not too heavy, the 10yo is okay, the 15 better and a bit deeper the 18 year old is a class drop of whisky and my normal tipple. Any older you get into some exceptional complex whiskys, I have a 40yo madiera casked Glenmorangie it is truly sublime.
There are a lot of unusual whiskys around just now, The Bruichladdich distillery have a number of exquisite whiskys on the market that might suit your need.
