i usd dried fruit and not bothered with sugar/honey etc (and yes i don;t just eat cake :-)
sweet porridge. oh no thats just wrong !
I also just add a handful of sultanas and make mine with half water and half milk
I know you're trying to lose weight but sweeteners and Options are full of Aspartame which really aren't good for you. Best to sweeten it with something healthy if you can- like honey!
a dram of Scotch and if you want it sweeter, Drambuie, and a dod of cream....
I use Splenda and cinnamon. Lovely also cinnamon is supposed to speed up weight loss.
Sweet porridge - sacrilege! Salt only.
Don't sweeten. Eat with salt added - delicious!
At a Boy Scout camp in Scotland the late 50's (decade, not my age at the time), our porridge one morning was known to be forgetful, and at least 4 of us added seasoning, ranging from salt to sugar - not recommended!
Now I live among Sassenachs, I have fallen into thir bad porridge habits - best taste yet 50:50 apple juice and semi skimmed milk, top off with blueberries. If the flavouring is a bit bland, try adding a pinch or two of cinnamon to the dry porridge first.
What about Agave Nectar? It's something I've been using since I started my (sort of!) weightwatching. It's made from a cactus plant, so perfect if anyone is a veggie and tastes gorgeous. Half way between honey and candyfloss - and only 1 calorie per tablespoon. I use it in cakes, desserts and porridge, just about everything.
Make mine with fully skimmed milk, a heaped teaspoonful of golden syrup and a sliced banana. I pretend it's banoffee pie. Ooh I want some NOW>
I have 2 smallish handfuls of porridge just about covered with semi-skimmed milk, with added raisins and dried cranberries then cooked for 1 min 20 secs in microwave on High. The raisins and cranberries take up the moisture so are really plump and juicy and make the porridge sweet. Mind you - I am fussy on the brand of porridge, I only have Scotts porridge oats OLD FASHIONED - these are more coarse than the original, as I cannot bear porridge runny, I can stand the spoon up in mine (Hubby says Yuk and stays away from my breakfast, he can't bear the smell, look or taste!)
Forgot the dribble of single cream on top - bit of luxury!
Fresh raspberries are yummy. When not available, maple syrup but it is horribly expensive to start. A little goes a long way. Raspberries far more virtuous. Also mix in strawberries or banana.
Sounds lovely Daisy - may try that for a change!
My granny used to have a porridge drawer - a drawer in the kitchen lined with paper that she poured the porridge in and sprinkled some currants on it. it set and she'd cut it into squares as snacks.....think she invented the cereal bar!! But then maybe everybody's granny did the same?!!?
I have dark muscavado sugar on mine and real cream if we have it.

I have had porridge made with water and salt, it was surprisingly nice, I do prefer it with milk and sugar though.
with sugar...eeeeuuuukkkkk......only with salt. There's enough sugar in the milk (semi skimmed).

I never dribble real cream, I pour on loads or a spoon full of clotted, dribble indeed!!

if its not real cream it isnt permitted through the front door!
annie0000 - a porridge drawer?! Got to try that. The drawer with miscellaneous bits and bobs that might come in handy one day is going to get emptied. Today.

Mr Frog has been known to make porridge from muesli. Sounds weird, but it kind of works.
