is the one that turns orange/yellow a swede. And do you cook it just like mash(potatoes) I've done all those 'root' vegetables in a stew but just fancy some mashed. I think you can buy it ready cooked, is that any good?

You can buy it ready cooked and mashed. Just needs microwaving. Much easier than peeling, chopping and cooking a swede. And tastes just as good, I'm told. (I don't like it, myself)

yeah, think i'll get the 'ready-made' stuff, jo. Cant go wrong then, can I (I hope, lol)
If you've ever had 'haggis, neeps and tatties', you'll know that the 'neeps' are yellow/orangish. (If you've not had haggis, neeps and tatties your culinary experience is sadly lacking!). Those 'neeps' are actually swedes (and not, as some people think, 'turneeps').

Recipes here (with swede mash right at the top of the list):

looks easy enough to cook. If I like the ready-made stuff, i'll 'have a bash' at it next time. And I wouldn't/couldn't eat haggis if you paid me. ;)
I've had haggis once. It gave me the strange sensation of being still hungry and heavy in the stomach, at the same time.
Strange, I really like haggis and never experienced strange sensations. Maybe it was down to nerves. Swede, like most root veg, is fine, but I don't think I'd want to be paying a premium for preparation no matter how good the final result was.
I love swede - great in casseroles as well as a veg on its own. :-)
I've tried the prepared stuff and the flavour is not as good as freshly cooked and mashed Svejk... it's so easy and cheap.... Boil it like potatoes, mash well with a little butter and season with White pepper, must be white not black.
I call it a turnip.
Ready cooked might be loaded with salt. People watching their BP should be aware of that.
Swedes are just Swedish turnips.
I got told off for saying as much previously Zacs. Apparently they are a different genus but just evolved to be similar ?
Or if I'm in Stoke, chonnucks.
Don't get us started on what is a swede and what is a turnip, north of the Border.... :-)
Orange is swede, white is turnip, both are vomit inducing
In my youth, raw swede always had a slight 'nippyness', similar to that of true turnip. These days that taste is missing, and swedes seem totally bland and almost tasteless. And no, it's not that my tastebuds are failing!
We have mashed potatoes and turnips with our stews during the winter. The mash is an orangey colour.

Much as I like you, tilly, I don't think you should have mash with your stew. ;-(
Do you like dumplings, tilly? Mine are great, if I say so myself.
Swede is orange, turnip is white.
Buy the ready cooked stuff. Life is too short to spend your time breaking a wrist trying to chop the damn things

morning mrso,xx. I know from making stew that one of them things is really hard to cut up. Don't know how women manage it.
