Is Chateauneuf-du-Pape worth the extra ££££ we have family on Christmas day who drink and appreciate Red wine (we don't).

Thanks.

I'm not a wine drinker but I buy CdeP for friends and they love it. You can tell the difference between that and the old red biddy gut rot stuff.
You pay an awful lot for that name. Plenty more excellent reds out there at a fraction of the price.

Do you have any examples please?
Its a matter of taste, yes its quite expensive but an excellent red, also will impress your guests.
Some very excellent Riojas in the shops.
Well......I don't know.........

if you are willing tp pay £30-£50 for a bottle, then it may well be worth it, however if you don't, then most of the cheap CN d Pape are no better than a cheap bottle of red.

Your choice jd.

I am not a fan of the Riojos, but try these..........particularly Pesquera Crianza..you will be delighted.....about £15
one thing I learnt from my spanith red wine drinking course
was that there are some very good spanish red out there

crianza £
reserva ££
and gran reserva £££

where three £ is about £15
At the top end CduP is well worth a go but at 'supermarket level' there are far better alternatives. I'd go with janbee's Riojas or Sqad's nice selection or, for me anyway, a decent Barolo would make you a friend for life jd
A Corbieres AOC is a very satisfying red with a mellow taste and is not expensive.

We are catering for 3 wine lovers on Christmas Day.
A bottle each should cover it (tough if they want more!)
The Chateauneuf-du-Pape I looked at was at a supermarket and priced at £14.99. But as some are pointing out perhaps better supermarket alternatives, so thanks for the tips, will investigate further!
Have you got a local independent wine shop, they are usually very knowledgeable and helpful. You will get good advice and at good range of prices.
Question Author
We do actually Ubasses, in the village where we live.
That is an obvious starting point thanks
buy one bott of all three and then say you are giving them a wine tasting.
Recommended: Chateaneuf-du-Pape Legat du Pape: Marks and Sparks about £16.00 a bottle.
O_G......LOL.........jd needs 3 bottles...;-)
