I used to have the same problem with Young's battered fish, I put it down to my 14 year old noisy oven (electric).
So, was disappointed when the same thing happened in my new oven (also elec), but not quite on the same scale.
Soon discovered that 160 degrees in a pre-heated fan assisted oven, for 25 mins(as apposed to the recommended 200 degrees), is all that is required.
Place in oven on a grille with a tray under. After 10 mins turn over.
You'll find that less oil seeps out, and what does - doesn't burn/smoke.
