I've just eaten a tin of Tesco mackerel in tomato sauce. It wasn't very nice but that aside, when do you think that fish last swimmed in the sea?

or even swam?
Oh...12+ months ago?
There may be a canning date on the tin.
No idea - but found this, which may/may not help you in your quest.

Almost definitely before it was put in the tin.

That's a great link wolf, thanks. Pasta that's what I was thinking and Svejk based on taste I reckon it was long before it was put in the tin :-)
I tend to like tinned fish. Good on toast. But don't recall Tesco own brand to comment on the taste. But as for when it swam, not that important is it, the tinning process ensures very slow deterioration.

It's not about importance nor at all based on worries though - I was interested and wondering.
I always buy Tesco's own brand mackerel and eat it at least 3 times per week with salad. Never found anything wrong with it and, imho, it is much better than some others. Prefer it in teriyaki sauce rather than plain old tom sauce, though.
Hi Prudie....Of all tinned fish, Mackerel is the very one that I would avoid. In fact I even avoid fresh Mackerel because it is regarded as a scavenger that will eat anything and, in inshore waters, is found in abundance around sewer outfalls. You don't need bait to catch them from an open boat; just throw overboard a line with a few hooks and you'll certainly catch a few in a matter of minutes.

Hans.
If you want your mackerel in tomato sauce to taste much better, Prudie, simply follow my recipe here:

(I used pilchards but it should work just as well with mackerel).

Tried and tested by Mrs Chappie's OH!

never mind the date, think on what the mackerel ate.
I buy peppered mackerel in tins and serve with creamy scrambled egg and salad - yummy.
we've just had some tinned pilchards in tomato sauce on cheese + garlic pizza bread.....was vair nice ;) ...that's our omega 3 till next week x x
It matters little what it ate. We eat the meat not the digestive tract.
can I mention - I love fish food -but when you see more and more and more of those poor people drowning - the fish have to eat - so what are we eating - dead flesh. just a thought

Are fat with the flesh off your kin."

I get the Tesco tinned Mackerel in brine and try to eat a tin every day. Can't get enough of the stuff.
