put that stupid bit of sealing tape on aluminium foil?

When you open a new box of foil, the first 12 inches is spoiled because the sealing tape never comes off cleanly and tears the foil in half.

Yep, I'd like an answer to that too!
Oh, evening Tilly
If you are wasting 12" of foil you are buying it in super industrial quantities.

When I buy from supermarket or wholesaler I find the wastage minimal. It really isn't difficult to lift the sticky bit.
Hoi, it's only me that moan on here, giver over or are you trying to take my spot x
"If you are wasting 12" of foil you are buying it in super industrial quantities."

12 inches would only just be enough to wrap a sandwich though, ecclescake- not exactly industrial usage
I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I do hope we get a definitive answer.
Maybe take a deep breath, a small paring knife and gently cut the tape if it won't peel off.

Eccles, I buy a packet of foil from Sainsbury's. It is ordinary extra strong. Nothing industrial about it.
No matter how I try to lift the seal carefully, it always rips the foil and spoils it. Maybe it's just me.......and Sibs
FF, I was referring to the circumference of the roll of foil. 12" of wastage doesn't stack up, that would be a stonking amount of foil.
If they'd only fold the top bit down, it would be easy to pull off
I'm sure Lakeland or Betterware catalogues will have a little foil tape lifter gadget you can buy for a bout a tenner
I almost found out but at the last minute I was stymied ;-(

I don@t see why they have to put the sealing tape on in the first place. Why not just put a roll of foil in a box?
When the foil rips so that only half peels off you can easily waste 12 inches before you sort it out. Sometimes it takes a lot more than that to recover it
Clearly my stinginess creeps in and stops me wasting more than 1 1/4 turn of foil!
Question Author
I still don't see the point of the seal.

and.......why do manufacturers......? (Any more rants?)
I use a razor sharp knife and manage to retain all my foil.
The sticky tape is there to prevent the aluminium foil from loosening on the roll between being packed and you buying it. Ever noticed how tight it is wound...if it loosened in transit, you'd lose a lot more than several inches because it's easily damaged.
Stuff I buy doesn't have any sealing tape.
Maybe 10 metre roll is actually 10 metres 12 inchs long?
midwives always used to grow one fingernail long, in case they needed to cut the frenulum under the tongue of a baby who looked as if it might be tongue-tied. Perhaps you could grow one to get under the sealing tape?
