All produce keeps best in cooler conditions, which slow down the decay process. Onions should be kept where temperatures are 32 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. An unheated basement or garage is suitable as long as temperatures don’t freeze inside. The location must also be dry and low in humidity to prevent rot and molds. The length of time you can store onions will depend on variety and site conditions. Some bulbs can be stored for several months.

Onions are a main crop worldwide due in part to the ability to store in the right conditions for months. My Grandad used to manage to keep them all through winter. av has given a nigh on definitive explanation of the best way to store them. I would only add that, if you have the space, store them so that they are not touching and turn them gently during a regular inspection. If you have access to enough tissue paper, lightly wrap them as well.

My Turkish run convenience supermarket 900yds from my front door does a 5kg string bag (dutch grown) for £1.89p a bag . 2 or 3 may be a bit mouldy on purchase, probably due to poor stock rotation, but we can't get through them all quick enough before we chuck about 5 remaining onions out. 8 out of a bag of 50-55 isn't too much wasteage for the price and saves my poor old back in the veg plot. :-)

We do it slightly differently here in the U.S. (still talking about onions, aren't we?) When we pick the onions, (usually a Walla-Walls type yellow onion variety, they are about 3 to 4 inches in diameter. We pick them with enough neck to tie them together, as others have suggested, but then (this is usually late September to early October) I hang them on a south facing wall outside being sure that they don't get rained on. I leave them there at least 2 weeks and then store them, still hanging as others have suggested. The drying gives an expected 4 months at least,of storage. We often have them last through the winter...
Usually onions keep for about 10 -12 months when stored in cool place, although this is mostly for the one's you will buy in show..
