They come in a small burger-sized piece of dough, which you drop into very hot fat. It expands instantly to the standard size, and you take it out of the pan and drain it.
You can buy side-plat-sized flat ones at supermarkets, and cook them yourself, very nice.
If you take the uncooked ones you can cook them in the microwave, you have to put them on something to lift them above the base of the microwave about level with the middle and then give one about 25-30 seconds. comes out very dry and cccrunchy with no oil content.
Ideal for quick snacks when you don't want to put a frying pan with oil on just for that!

Ah qapmoc - that's where we've been going wrong then because we've always cooked our poppadoms flat on the microwave turntable & they come up looking like litle curved baskets - OK if you want some fancy looking edible containers to put nibbles in, but not very authentic if you want to serve with curries. What do you rest them on - a plate on an upturned bowl or something ?
Hi wendy, Well there are two points, first is as said to get it about the centre of the chamber and the second is not to put it on something flat which will make a large contact area with the poppadom and absorb the heat, what I use is a bowl which has a narrow rim that it stands on and not a flat base, Upside down then the poppadom only touches a small edge.
