Why do things like crisps and confectionery always/usually come in packs of 48?

48 equates to the non metric measure of four dozen (dozen = 12). Pack sizes and boxes have been made to fit 48. There are probably so many stock accounting systems geared up to multiples of 12 that it is easier to stick with this traditional measure than change. Also, cards of say, 24 peanut packets form a more pleasing layout at 8x3. Cheers, Andy.
