beaujolais is traditional
I agree with woofgang. Last night we had a lightly chilled Beaujolais from Safeways - not posh I know, but it was gorgeous!

Thanks for the replies. I'd heard about beaujolais but most of it is quite pricey (to me!). I had a theory that many cheap easy-drinking red wines could be made more palatable by chilling. This theory was based on a chilled red wine I had recently as part of a menu del dias in Spain. So I bought a 2.99 bottle of B-bodied garnacha and stuck it in the fridge. We had it with our meal this evening - it was perfectly acceptable. Far nicer than it would have been at room temperature and far nicer than a cheap white wine would have been.
Hi boognish, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Do try the Safeway's Beaujolais if you can. It's about 2.99 and is often recommended by Wine journalists, so it's cheap but not in a 'plonky' way.
Why not try a nice Chianti? There are loads about - I don't know what kind of money you want to spend on it, but go for one that costs about 5, and it's more than likely to be perfectly drinkable. If you're feeling saucy, then try a Stak Monte Bernardi Panzano-in-Chianti (Chianti Classico 1997)!!
