When you vote for your MP you are voting for them to make decisions for you.
If you think thta is undemocratic - I have never voted that I want to breathe a smokers noxious fumes when I go down the pub.
If you want to argue this - you will have to do much better than that
Come on now... if there WAS a public vote, the number of votes for a smoking ban would be overwhelming.
Only around 20% of the adult population are smokers. The rest of us value our respiratory system.

I respect your opinions completely.

I'm perfectly happy not smoke in Bars and restaurants etc. and i do this by choice.
Not because the government have TOLD me to do so.

I respect your lungs more than most, and would certainly not smoke in your car/house etc even if you said that i could ( hyperthetically ) - i don't smoke in my own car either.

I'm happy for smoking to be socially outlawed, but i'm not happy with the way that this country is for-ever compromising our freedom of choice.

This is just the start of things to come.
What next ? Alcohol, freedom of speach, clothing, our choice of vehicle.... we're there already.

Lets all stop smoking - but lets do it by our own means.

And i certainly did not vote for the debacle that you care to call the Labour Government.

Come back Mrs Thatcher - all is forgiven

I applaud what you have said - but what about those ignorant people that think it is OK to pollute my lungs in any situation. Those annoying people who are puffing out carcinogenic fumes when I am having a meal. The biggest change that I have noticed in this society over the last few years, is thtat people are more selfish. When people think only of themselves - then maybe laws should be passed that force them to think of others. I am a firm believer in democracy and freedom of speech and expression - but sometimes curbs have to be put in place if a person can not see beyond themselves.
If people had been not smoking because they worried about others health (they obviously do not consider their own) then there would have been no need to pass any smoking laws, but as most people do not bother, and so have been abusing the rights that they do have, then maybe it is correct to change those rights (they can still smoke - they still have that right) to protect those people that are being harmed.
Wait until they change something you want to do without consulting you...

Some other chap said it well:

When the they came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.
