For those of you who live in or know central London- can you suggest anywhere nice and relatively inexpensive (i.e. no 30 main courses please!) to go and eat at the weekend?

Nandos!
Depends what you are looking for, you can eat fairly inexpsensively in chinatown. You might want to try http://www.london-eating.co.uk/ which has reviews and average prices of meals. If you want a specific cuisine, let me know and I can maybe recommend... (live and work in london).

could also try www.toptable.co.uk

(Hope you can read this easily without line breaks - yes, back at work I'm afraid) ***** MILDREDS - fantastic veggie restaurant near Soho (Greek Street) ***** THE STOCKPOT - home cooked food in Soho (Compton Street) ***** POLLOS - v.cheap & cheerful pasta - (Compton Street) ***** WAGAMAMAS - my favourite! Japanese noodle bar with HUGE portions (Lexington Street)

Italian? French? Been to loads of noodle bars recently so a bit noodled out.

If you like french you could try Cafe Boheme in Soho, http://www. cafeboheme.co.uk/index.php I have eaten in the bar area which is next to the cafe, which was very nice, it did get very lively later on so yoiu might want to check if this is the case with restaurent.

Thanks people. I'll report back on Monday to let you know where I ended up going! (not that you're remotely interested but I'm going to tell you anyway!)
Pollo Bar is currently closed for refurbishment
I know you mentioned Italian food, but there's a good Mexican restaurant for next time - Chiquitas in Leiscester Square, very close to the Odeon cinema.
