Hi Fakeplastic, check this website

Sorry I can't be of more help. But I would imagine that onions count as daily quota of fruit and veg because they are high in vitamin C.

sorry that doesn't seem to work. www.whfoods.com

Thanks Dark Angel.  Good Website, I have added it to my 'Favourites'.  I also think they must count.  I use loads of onions but had never thought of them as part of the daily quota!  I also use loads of Garlic, but I don't think that counts - don't really know though.
I don't think either onions or garlic count.  Apart from anything else, you have to eat a certain amount for it to count as a portion, and i don't think (or hope) many people would eat enough onion or garlic a day to count as one portion

I was under the impression that all veg counted apart from things like potatos which are too starchy.  A portion is 80g so, as long as you were using this much, it would count.  I certainly count it when I eat it in this volume, usually with a tin of tomatos and some brocolli/other greens as a sauce for pasta or rice.  Garlic would count but you'd have to eat 80g worth of cloves which might not do your social life much good!

I definitely eat the amount of onions required, if not more.  I also eat loads of garlic.  No wonder I have no friends and people cross the street when they see me coming!

The Department of health Website has loads of info on 5-a day, plus a .pdf file you can download ti give you a guide to the amount which counts as a portion.

Hi Fakeplastic. Onions do count towards the recommended daily consumption of fruit and veg - provided that it is a large onion and if you say that you eat large quantities of onion , then you probably do make up a portion. I found a site which may be useful to you as it lists what quantities you need to eat of various food groups for it to count as a portion. It is www.netdoctor.co.uk/ads.asp . Hope this helps x
