Is a sild (brisling) related to the sardine family, like pilchards, or are they all different species of fish?

According to one of the definitions here,it is a sprat or small herring.

Oh blimey - thanks pasta. I understood silds to be called that if they come from the Norway region...but they're a type of herring? Wonder if you could smoke them and turn them into mini kippers!!! : )
