My husband has been nagging me for ages to buy Liver (yuk!) so today I bought some in Asda - does anyone know what I can do with it now, preferably to disguise it so my teenage son will eat it! Thanks

Ox, lamb or pig ?
Question Author
Its Lamb!
I know that liver and onions with mash is very tasty. But I don't have a recipe.
My mum always cooked hers in the oven in water with onions & a stock cube. Makes a lovely gravy then make some mustard mash!
we had lambs liver and bacon last night. whatever you do dont over cook it. I always soak my liver in milk for about an hour, drain it and pat it dry. I then coat it in a little seasoned flour.I fry it in a little garlic olive oil and butter about 2 minutes each side. Once cooked I put it in the warming drawer and put a little wholegrain mustard and some red wine into the frying pan with the juices and reduce it down. Put the cooked liver with the crispy bacon in a serving dish and pour the red wine reduction over the liver, serve with minted new potatoes and asparagus (or a veg or 2 of your choice) You could serve some fried onions with it as well.

Hope it turns out well however you decide to cook it

Ooooh that sounds gorgeous, going out now to get the rest of the ingredients! Thanks :)
a pleasure. Hope you'll try some as well xx
I usually dust mine with seasoned flour, and flash fry it in a really hot pan Must be a hot pan other wise it will take too long to cook and be leathery. About 2 mins each side as Maizie said, so it is still pinkish inside. No need to rest it as it is not a muscle, so whatever else you're cooking with it, do the liver last.
Ox liver is beautiful braised in the oven and a lot cheaper than lambs liver.
I dont rest it smart, I just put it there why I make the reduction, as you say no need to rest liver.

Hi smart, are you watching the new series of Britains Best Dish?
Fry chopped onions and liver (sliced into 1" strips). Poke with fork to check for blood, if none cover with boiling water to simmer for 15mins, season & serve with mash pots & greens.

yums !
We usually have pigs liver and I do more or less as mazie does ( sans red wine ) but fry slices of apple with it. Scrummy . And have with mash and spinach .Touch of nutmeg in the spinach .
Soaking in milk takes the bitterness out .

Mazie - what a lovely tea, will definately will be making it again only my 15yrs son will be having something else coz he wouldn't even try it! Thank you again!
Like others, we rinse the liver, dust it heavily with salt, pepper (lots of pepper, thank you) and flour. Fry it to brown on both sides in a good olive oil, maybe 3 to 4 minutes a side (preferably in a heavy cast iron skillet), then, having thickly sliced two... no make that three onions, place the onions on the liver steaks (about 1/2 inch thick) and cover with a skillet lid so it'll steam for about 5 minutes or until the onions are good and translucent... The cover should fit right down on the liver, not on the top of the skillet so the lid should be smaller than the skillet....
Give the offal a good christian/muslim/hindu/jewish etc. burial and don't bother again.
Switch to dhal, quorn or free-range chicken !
Soak in milk for a while - cut into fine strips saute with some onion add some sweet paprika - add brandy and sour cream season- serve with rice - liver stroganoff - yummy - but do not overcook the liver or boil the cream
