Does any one still eat Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney Pie cooked in the tin! Noticed they have made a comeback on Supermarket shelves! What other Steak and Kidney pies are good and any good home made recipes welcome!

or a tin of peas'n'carrots, sandy - always on the shelf in my house, next to the pie
I've heard people say how much they like the Fray Bentos Pies in a tin but I still haven't tried one. My sister in law loves Smash dried potatoes better than the real thing, some people have no taste! :O
Or those new potatoes in a tin...
Carrots and peas? We're talking gourmet now.
There was very little meat in those tinned pies but the pastry was good. It was a job to get the tin opened.
Jan I don't think I have ever drunk THAT much! Poodi - you were fibbin on the gourmet bit - new pots in tins I dind to be quite indigestible.
I dispute that the pastry was good sandy, the top layers maybe, but the nether layers a soggy mess...
You haven't lived ttfn. Plenty of chilli sauce with it. Could just eat one now.
The new pots in tins are really quite palatable if you drain them, crush them and fry them in some oil with an Oxo cube crushed into the oil
ttfn didnt say i like them, but remember them lol...
I thought that's how a pie was supposed to be. Crispy, slightly singed, top layer and other layers of under cooked stuff.
Poodicat, are your ears burning?
I don`t eat pastry, rarely eat red meat and very rarely eat any kind of convenience food but for some reason I love the odd Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie. If someone made me a nice home made one I wouldn`t touch it for the above reasons. Strange.
I have tried a Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney pie a long time ago, but I really didn't like it, I'm sure it's ok if your in a rush, and it's near to hand, but I'd rather just bake my own, so much more tasty and nourishing!............
Sorry poodi - I stand corrected - tis my age and health you know (pity me)
No time or inclination to cook pastry, welsh - even the birds won't eat my baking.
Just seen that thread Sandy...
Oh well boxtops, not a problem, I often cook my own steak and kidney,in the slow cooker, and if in a bit of a rush, which is often! i use frozen pastry, it's really good!............and saves a bit of time too!...........
1lb stewing steak & 4 lambs kidneys (membrane removed) all cubed. Put into pressure cooker & cover with boiling water & season, add Oxo cube & sliced onion and steam up for 15mins (to tenderise). If too much liquid drain surplus to serve separately as gravy. Pour contents into oven proof dish & cover with puff pastry; insert into medium oven for 30mins & serve with veg.
...or reach up on the shelf and bring down he F&B tin, tambo....
boxy, a recipe was asked for......how else will the younguns learn. You get more by my method.
