People have been left outraged after a Tory MP stated poverty-hit Brits who have been forced to turn to food banks "cannot budget" and "cannot cook properly." Conservative Lee Anderson was speaking at the Commons as a debate was taking place about the Queen's Speech, when he claimed people had the ability to "cook meals from scratch" for "30p a day" instead.

In response, Jack Monroe wrote: "You can't cook meals from scratch with nothing. You can't buy cheap food with nothing. The issue is not "skills", it's 12 years of Conservative cuts to social support. The square root of f*** all is still going to be f*** all, no matter how creatively told to dice it.

Unfortunately this story has been twisted somewhat and it is to do with a scheme that runs in his area.
But don't worry the experts will be along shortly to tell you all this and more.
Haven't you been reading other threads on this, maggiebee? That's not what he claimed.... but don't let the truth get in the way of your 'outrage'. He said that in his constituency there is a scheme running that shows people how to provide a meal for around 30p. That's all.
There you are, maggiebee. I'm not an expert but I do take the rouble to investigate.

//He also offered an invitation for Opposition MPs to visit a scheme in his own constituency that represented 'a real food bank' and allowed people to 'make a meal for about 30p a day'.//

*trouble* not rouble.

As you predicted Redhelen72, an "expert" appeared as if by magic!! As TTT would say PMSL
Haha! Never mind, maggiebee. That didn't work. Try something else.
So it would seem Maggie
Just a pity they don't have a 'brilliant scheme' in Ashford where there is someone on hand to teach this MP how to cut his cloth accordingly as regards his expenses claim.

Like a moth to the flame - so predictable PMSL
I think there's an opportunity here for some bright spark in publishing to issue an austerity cookbook. They might make a fortune.
Feeding each member of your family for only 6.30 a week, not counting economies of scale, would attract many in these straightened times.
So maggie posts a statement. Someone comes along to prove that statement is wrong, or at least it's based on Lee Anderson's out of context words, and that person is criticised for proving maggie's point wrong.

There's something fundaMENTALly wrong with that as logic.
I think you'll find the times are 'straitened'.
Thank you for straightening me out, goodgoalie. :-))
[email protected] Monroe, mentioned in Maggie's post, has already done that big time...

I think the only thing predictable is you Maggie.

All Naomi has done is point out the para that shows what was said. Rather than what some wanted him to say. Hardly warrants your posts against her does it?

Yes, some great recipes in her "Cooking on a Bootstrap" cookery book.

The only thing the guardian is good for is wiping your backside with.

//Lee Anderson has been condemned by opposition MPs and campaigners after arguing in the Commons that food banks are largely unnecessary because the main cause of food poverty is a lack of cooking and budgetary skills.//

He's right.
He most certainly is.

Unless you are a fan of controlling people with a Nanny State.
