i have agreed to make my friends wedding cake but she wants it to be 3 tiers, one on top of the other, and chocolate sponge. anyone have a recipe for a chocolate cake that will come out sturdy enough to hold another cake on top of it, i think straight forward sponge would just collapse.

Retro - if you go to a cake place or a craft place - they will have the rods that you stick down through the cake to hold the next layer and the cardboard/plastic thing for the next layer to lay on top of on top of the rods. I think that is what all the bakeries do - that way you can make it any kind of cake you want to use, because all it has to support is the icing/frosting/fondant and the decorations.
