Hi
could someone please look at Gertrude Cowap on the 1891 census for Manchester please? She is aged 21 born manchester , living with her sister and brother-in-law James and mary E Bretland. i cannot work out her occupation, I think it may be Fustiers machinist but then the 's' could be an 'r!'

Cheers

Hi Dotty, sorry to butt in this is not my field of expertise but might it be Fustian that is being referred to, Fustian is a stiff woven mostly cotton cloth often made int jackets for the working classes in 19th century.

thanks, yes i knew about Fustian Cutters etc but the letter 's' seems like an 'r' and the rest of the word isn;t quite right.
Of course there were Furbishers too, but that seems unlikely also. Good luck in your quest it all fascinates me.

The transcriber on FMP thought it was 'furriers machinist', and I agree on this one. Looks like an enumerator's mark through the word, like a backward L, also done on the entry below on 'police constable' and on 'brewers cellarman' a bit further down.
Just googled manchester and furriers - came up with

so possible
Question Author
thanks for that rose, I was reading it as furriers i think but it just didn'e seem like they'd use a machinist but then they would have linings in the coats/hats etc. so yes it is probably right, thanks.
