On my great grandma's death certificate (16th May 1949), it says she died at Alvaston 'U.D.' Alvaston is in Nantwich, Cheshire. There was a workhouse there until 1930 but by 1949, it was probably a National Heath Service establishment. Does anyone know what U.D. might have stood for?
Old-fashioned terms. These were sub-divisions of a county with limited devolved powers. Where I grew up was a borough, where I live now used to be a UD.
