Was reading the Culture section of The Sunday Times earlier and came across a very odd reference. The writer, Stephen Armstrong, says: "Last year, the German government sent out a public announcement that every citizen should stockpile enough food for ten days and and clean drinking water for five days". I'm baffled. Anyone got any idea why this might have been the case or whether it's nonsense?

It wouldn't take much for terrorists to massively disrupt a country's infrastructure. Coordinated attacks on major transport interchanges, railway lines and perhaps power distribution. Even a cyber attack could stop everyday life if planned well.

I remember there was some talk of terrorists possibly contaminating our water supplies. I don't know if Germany was thinking along the same lines when they issued that announcement.

even what used to be called extreme weather can cause problems with, say, knee-deep contaminated water or power out for days. Not a bad idea to be ready for the worst.

Trump is an added factor, of course. When he launches his nukes, how can we be sure he won't confuse North Korea with the North Circular?
