Auschwitz is not a memorial, it is a macabre museum of various artefacts, gas chambers, cremation ovens, etc a ghastly, hideous and gruesome reminder of man's inhumanity to man.

I reiterate, bulldoze the lot, and if need be erect a lasting memorial to all those that died and suffered there.

Calling it a tourist attraction is an insult. It's precisely because it is a reminder of man's appalling inhumanity to man that it should be preserved. He needs reminding of what he's capable of.

Just as the cenotaphs act as a lasting memorial to the sacrifice of fallen troops in wartime ("lest we forget"), Auschwitz is a lasting, and graphic, reminder, focal point and symbol, of "mans inhumanity to man".Hideous and macabre it may be, but as a species we have a regretably short memory for some things, and lasting symbols are important.

The world needs such graphic reminders of just how inhuman societies and cultures can be, leading to a stated aim of genocide.Military actions in recent years from around the globe, in Bosnia and Serbia, in Darfur, in Iraq, all show that xenophobia, distrust of others and tribalism are still the visceral driving force of humankind. Whilst this remains, symbols such as Auschwitz remain indispensable.

Man has been on earth just under 500,000years and during that time, we have seen numerous examples of "man's inhumanity to man" and yet what have we learnt..................It still goes on.

Genghis Khan, World War 2 and 1, the Japanese atrocities in World War 2, the Spanish Inquisition, infanticide and I could go on and on.

What has religion, or symbols of atrocities contributed?............bu99er all.

I had a wonderful weekend in Krakow in October (by far the best European city I've been to) and went to Auschwitz-Birkenau and it was truly truly humbling.

I'm not by nature an emotional person, but these places brought a lump to the throat.

They must always be there as a reminder.

It is absurd to suggest it should be bulldozed.

Wait... are you implying Auschwitz is being maintained purely out of 'Jewish influence'? Because I get that impression very strongly from this passage, but I'd really, really like to think I'm wrong.

i'm not jewish, not religious at all in fact, but i would prefer to see auschwitz remain as a reminder rather than be bulldozed.
