You would still have to pay for the sanding sheets if hired.No need to go to a lot of expense. DIY stores have several makes and sizes. But buy one that is not too heavy to hold up especially as you are sanding walls. Wear a mask as well. Some sanders have facility for a vacuum cleaner to be attached that does save a lot of dust getting everywhere but do make them more difficult to handle. Depending how bad the walls are start with a rough paper ( less clogging) and then repaeat with finer papers until the desired smoothness has been achieved.
