weed with white flowers

What is the name of the weed with ivy like leaves and lily like flowers?
You see it along the railway sides
And, more to the point, how do you get rid of it?

I know the one you mean - and I must admit, as far as weeds go, it's quite pretty. If it didn't get so out of control, I would leave them. I'm not very helpful though in that I don't know its name or how to exterminate...

Greater bindweed.... its an absolute thug and really hard to get rid of

Actually, it is very pretty, and I leave it in some places, but it's devil when it winds round roses, etc. I gather a clump of it in gloved hands and spray with roundup, making sure I miss any other plants. You have to let it grow first so it has a good supply of leaves.

If you just try and pull it off or cut at the base it will come back year after year. I have (almost) solved the problem with the Roundup method.
