But is very smelly.
Truly! When you touch it, or try to pull it up, it has a horrid very hard-to-describe smell, really gets up your nose.

It is like the bindweed that ric describes, in that it has white flowers and is similar-ish to ivy, but is a more upright weed rather than a long trailing one.

Anyone?

Marijuana!!
Has Marijuana got flowers?
Does it smell like cats?
does it have small clusters flowers or larger single ones
is it stinking nanny
Question Author
It's definitely not marijuana - I wound't complain about having that in my garden.

Stinking nanny? Could be.

single flowers, though rather large. Creamy white with a yellow stamen. Ivy-like flowers but upright rather than trailing. The smell is not disgusting, but strange - like a really cheap horrid perfume that makes your nose itch.
Houttuynia? smell like cheap orange perfume..not strictly a weed but spreads and is hard to get rid of

Valerian smells like Dog Poo.

The other shrub that stinks of tom cat pee is Ribes (flowering current)
houttynia would be a good suspect I agree you tend not to find the green leafed one much since chameleon came along but it was very vigorous and could be mistaken for a weed
Question Author
woofgang & Rowan - that's the culprit indeedy - Houttynia. Looks nice, but the smell is horrid.

So it's not a weed?
