Just wondering if anyone has a set of pro's & cons for my planned favourites to populate my 'new' garden- I should add that we live in central Scotland. I love clematis, begonia, and roses. I have grown roses before and remember how much trouble they were with black-spot, mildew, greenfly, rust etc......I'm kind of talking myself into avoiding roses when I recall all the 'nasties' Any views or advice would be appreciated.....

Something that I find works against greenfly and blackfly is growing marigolds around them. I have yet to find what prevents blackspot and rust though some roses don't seem to get bothered in my garden such as Queen Elizabeth. I don't like spraying with chemicals.

I have heard about that before....will keep in mind although I'm thinking roses need more care & work than eg. begonias. However I know I could easily fall in love with an eye-candy hybrid !
I should have noted in my original question that I only intend to use containers for all my specimens.
Thank you for taking the time & trouble to answer....
Quite honestly, roses don't thrive in containers as heat dries the root system eventually. Begonias just keep on flowering, no dead-heading just need keeping damp but they do prefer shade at mid-day, which keeps the leaves lovely and green. For containers nothing beats pelagoniums in full sun as even if they dry out for a day or two (ie when you go away) they still flower and flower.

I am planning a watering micr-bore system for all my containers.....
Thanks again for your advice though.
