Ive constantly got those really annoying fruit flies flapping about my kitchen and lounge........ive got a basil plant in the kitchen, could they be coming from there? Where do they come from? how can i get rid of them (without binning my basil cos its very nice in my pasta dishes) and why do they insist on flying into my eyes? and why cant they fly in a straight line??!

Probably coming from basil plant. Often find that when I've bought 'living herbs' after a few days we're infested with stupid, pointless flies. When I put plant outside they go away. Did for a while wonder if it was their revenge for the genetic experiments I had to do on them in biology class at school (yes, really - had to breed fruit flies with different colour eyes or some such thing) - but like you, have noticed their utter lack of any intelligence and decided that it probably wasn't personal.
Radiogaga's right about the red wine too. Maybe that's why they can't fly in a straight line?
