Watering

Hello,

I need info on a method of watering my plants please.

When I leave home for two weeks I've heard I can water my plants by having a pot of water nearby, and rope or something leading from the water to the plant....the water seems to go along the rope and drip onto the plant...osmosis?
What is the best material to use please? Also, can the water pot be lower than the plants.
