the best time is late Autumn when the leaves have dropped.
Plant it in a hole filled with lime-free soil as hyrangeas don't like lime at all, and also only ever water with rain water unless you live in a `soft water area` Be sure to keep them moist especially in their growing season and not in a very sunny place. Mine face north and do very well.
Autumn is the time for moving to your flowerbed. Do not remove any dead flowerheads until all danger of frost has gone next spring.
