I have found that doing it yourself is not always the easy option. I hired a cleaner and as they were a bit dirty went over and over. I ended up shrinking the carpets. Becuase I was not insured for conducting the activity of cleaning I had to pay for new carpeting myself. A very costly exercise.
My advise, contact your local Servicemaster. I have sinced used their services and found them to be fantastic.
