Bed Linen

Hi, I am getting a new bed in the next few weeks and will need to get new bed linen things...I've always had polyester before, pillows and quilt - but fancy duck/goose feathers. Few questions - are they practical and hygenic (cleaning etc) and where do the feathers come from? Know they are from ducks and geese (before I get silly replies!) BUT it is merely a by-product of the meat industry isn't it?!? (I'm veggie and have slight reservations in this area...). Oh, I'm so indecisive! Cheers ;o)

Polyester be gone! The quality and comfort of duck/goose feathers is way superior to polyester, which always feels far too starchy and thin to me. You get a really luxurious sleep with down pillows and duvet. The feathers do end up settling at the end of the duvet, so a hearty shake is neeeded when you make your bed in the morning, but it's a small compromise. And I don't think they are any less hygenic than any other duvet. As per the animal rights issues, I'm sure all the dead geese and ducks that provided the feathers are utelised by the meat industry and Chinese restaurants! But I suspect it's no less unethical than wearing leather shoes or drinking milk. Enjoy!

Personally, my duck feather pillows are rubbish! They don't mould to your head and squish down with one hit of the head. Also I am often poked with the sharp ends of the feathers that tend to stick out through the fabric, while I'm sleeping and I find having to pull out handle the offending feather to be quite unpleasant.

Come to think of it, why am I still using them!?

Believe me, after trying several types pillows over the years, the BEST have turned out to be DUNLOPILLO! They mould to the shape of your head, always look plump under your pillow cases, never go flat & last forever. You can buy them in Argos @ �16.99 - well worth the money. Everyone who has stayed at our house, have asked what pillows they are & have proceeded to buy them. Good luck!

If you're asthmatic or have hayfever type allergies, you might sneeze a bit or wake up a tad wheezy after a night with duck/goose feather pillows. Plus dust mites have loads of little hidey holes in between the feathers...

hello i used to work in a linen shop and the best quality duvet to buy is a hungarian goose down. they are quite expensive but you have 15 year gauruantee. down is much softer than feathers ask to see a sample its well worth the buy. the pillows are about �80.00 each but you can always buy feather.

I have duck feather pillows, very comfy but gees they smell for a while.

I have had a feather duvet for over 10 years and the feathers seem to have disappeared - if you hold the duvet up the light you can see right through it and it has got a bit chilly in the winter, with no feathers in!  I have now bought a hollowfibre one, dont know how long it will last.  I have also been told to buy Dunlopillo pillows at Argos - same as smudge - and as I have to buy some new ones soon I will try them.  I do find feather pillows seem to 'sink' after a time.  Cheaper ones (hollow fibre) seem OK, and if they are that much cheaper than feathers (which they are) you can replace them more often.

Sorry I forgot - if you are buying duvet covers, buy polyester/cotton mix - the ironing is much much easier than pure cotton. Also if you are on a budget, Primark have some great ones for about �14 for a double (they also have hollow fibre 13.5 tog duvets, which are quite warm, really cheap, around �14 as well )  -- I would recommend on a single bed buy a double duvet and covers, on a double bed buy a king size duvet and covers - it will then wrap all around the bed almost to the floor and you won't lose it in the middle of the night !! It looks nicer on the bed as well.
