How do you separate 2 vases that have got stuck inside each other one glass and one ceramic ?

Try running them under hot water for a start.

put ice in the top one and run hot water over the bottom one???? Maybe

I agree with UKSWF, you need one to contract and the other to expand for them to separate, otherwise one may crack.

try running a little warm oil in between the two vases, then let them sit in a warm room.

I'm not sure that running hot water over a glass vase is a good idea - real chance of it cracking.

Hmm one may need to check the coefficients of expansion for glass and ceramics and check you are not enlarging the inner one whilst reducing the outer :-) Or enlarging the inner one faster than the outer. It may also suggest whether you should be cooling or heating.

You don't do much washing up then do you bhg if you think glass cracks in hot water:-)

I do sometimes wash up glass, Ladybirder, but it's usually Pyrex which is specially designed for use with hot water. When I wash a large flower vase that we have I always use cool water. There is also a difference between putting glass in cool water and heating it (as in a dishwasher) and plunging into hot water.
If the glass vase is made from thick glass then there's no way I would chance pouring hot water into it.

bhg I do it all the time. I struggle to open jam jars, pickle jars and every other jar you can think of. The only way I can open them is to run them under the hot tap for a few seconds and lo and behold they open easily. And when I wash up I plunge crystal glasses, thick glass tumblers, and delicate etched wine glasses into hot water with no problems. And the same goes for all my vases. I obviously wouldn't pour boiling water on them. Anyway, this is my last post on here as this is in danger of getting daft. Bye for now BHG. Sorry for highjacking your thread Rob.

no problem Ladybirder - sorry it caused such a stir. This is 2 vases that were donated to the Charity shop that I volunteer at so you can understand we don't want to lose either one. Will try all suggestions.
