Moving Trees

I have fir tree which needs to be moved from where I have it now,I will have to move a Californian Lilac to put the tree in it`s place.
When is the best time to do this?
Also when should one prune a CL?

move trees when they are dormant but the weather isn't too harsh, so late autumn.

leave plenty of soil on the fir and leave any of the white mould on the roots that you may see, this white fungi has a symbiotic relationship with the tree and will not survive without it.

The problem with moving fir trees is that they have broad, shallow roots. Good luck!!

Re, the Californian lilac (Ceanothus) they don't really need to be pruned but if you need to keep it to the size you want, then the best time would be immediately after flowering, which I would guess is late spring.

Just to add to the fir question, the smaller the tree the better chance of it taking. Keeping it well watered after planting will also help.

when you say a 'fir' tree do you really mean a fir tree or do you mean one of the numerous cypress hybrids that most people refer to as 'firs'. The reason I ask is that some of them have very deep roots which may make moving it a near impossibility if it is of any size.
