I want to know what are making round holes in my lawn. there is no loose soil near the holes. There is stream at bottom of the lawn. Could it be rats (hope not) I have not seen any rats, and with the large number of holes I would expect to see rats if there are any. Hope you can answer my question.

What size are the holes?
can you describe the holes? different animals make different kinds and sizes of holes.
I have known green woodpeckers to do this, after ants.
Could be squirrels, our lawn is covered with them where they bury their nuts they are a flaming pest. Thought about buying one of those sonar 'things' to keep them off( can't remember exactly what they are called). Has anybody tried them?
Is there a little patch of dry grass round the hole? If so could be crickets.
Garden must have gone back to the garden, to measure the holes.
Are the holes close to the stream ?
She's still in the garden, is Garden. Either that, or she's mixing Pollyfilla.
........with 1 'l'
If the holes are conical, about 20mm across the top and30-40mm deep my guess would be green woodpeckers.
Possibly water voles.
If they have big mound of soil on top, it's moles.
Yep, moles.
Further to my earlier reply, are you anywhere near the Meon Valley - lots of water voles were released there recently.

Come into the garden, Maude!
If it has just started to happen, then most likely it is squirrels.
