What creature would dig a round 2 inch hole in the flower border of my garden. Its round and goes down about 3 inches and then veers off to the side.

Yes rats are more likely to come out at night, the dogs and children are not a problem, they just need to make sure that the poisons are placed underground or in a place inaccessible to the dog and children, due to a taste deterrent in the poison (Bitrex) a child would spit it out very promptly, the same is true for most dogs but not always, either way they need to be...

In the past I found several similar holes in the side border of my house, which were becoming more frequent. I sent for the "terminator" chap who informed me yes my worst fear they were rat holes !! He put this blue crystal type powder down the holes, which I then earnestly covered each hole with a heavy stone. (as I was worried stiff being a dog owner)

RAT
Yup had rats myself and it looks like a cuddly rat hole
I recon a woodworm has caused your strange holes, Yilly.
Question Author
Whirly......that's scary. I'm happy with a mole or vole hole. I don't want a rat hole!
Question Author
Do you get woodworm in trees?

Gotta go, tea's ready. Back later.
My money is on a rat! It ain't no mole!
Yes Tilly, I hope in your case it is a mole or a vole. I also was advised not to leave any food for the birds out. Though at least my feathered friends still come to drink & bathe at the 2 bird baths.

Looks like and would be treated as a Rat hole to/by me.

Rats!
Yep, it would appear so !.

I live right by a river. Could it be an otter hole? The holes in the tree are not so much of a worry except that the tree is probably dying! Umph!
Rats!!
Question Author
It's only a small hole. Vole size I would say. Rats are big aren't they?
There not that big, Yilly.
Question Author
Oh! rats.
You'll have to stop feeding the birds for a while.
Whatever it is, Tilly...love it....it's chosen you.....☺
