Fierce Destructive Creature

Can any ABrs guess the name of the likely creature which is shredding both sides of my newly opened leaves owned by a solitary fruit cherry tree. It's only 3-4 seasons old. It resides in West Scotland.

It's a bit early for caterpillars, so you can take them out of the equation... I think...

Is it possible that they may have been lacerated by a heavy hail storm shower.
I've seen some young tender leaves shredded in this way, around here.

I'm afraid caterpillars are around now. Seen around ten today while doing some weeding .. they were fairly large at about 2" in length... orange and black.
We are not in the west of Scotland though ... but on the south east coast.

Thanks to all for your responses......I saw one remedy in the link that mentions the use of lime to eradicate these slugs/larvae. I'm guessing that garden lime is different to using a fresh lime squeezed in water for spraying?
One other thought- Jeyes fluid?

lime different ..lol...Jeyes not a good idea as it contains very strong chemical..try a weakish solution of washing up liquid...spray on leaves ..good for aphids...

Thanks MM! I think I saw that somewhere else as a remedy for aphids. I just hope it chokes these bug***s!

I had to come back again to this question.....dive buddy -your link does fit the description although I have not physically seen these monsters(they must be pretty big judging on the extent of the damage)
Would slug pellets be a remedy??
