Wisterias

Hi green-fingered ABers out there ... do you think I should be panicking about our two wisterias? Have just been outside to do a bit of pruning and tidying up, and noticed that there don't seem to be any buds on our wisterias still ... everything else seems to have survived "The beast" .... or don't they start growing until a bit later on in the spring? Hard question Chokkie. Are they new Wisteria or well established? Plus how hard a frost have you had and for how long? It is wise to protect Wisteria in areas that are prone to long hard frosts but I think that if you have had them for a while you should be OK. We are all at least 3 weeks behind compared to previous years but are only experiencing weather that for centuries was pretty standard.

Another point Chokkie, frost is at it's most damaging when plants and shrubs have already budded. If yours have not yet budded it seems that the Wisteria has been clever.

Would give them the benefit of the doubt chokkie. Everything is way behind this year because of the "the beast" and hard frost. Think they'll surprise you in a few weeks.

I would hold fire for now and wait to see what happens.
The pruning info, I have, is: cut back current years side growths to about 6in in July.

Hi folks, thanks for all your advice. In answer to some of your questions - well, one wisteria is very well established, and the other - well, it is well established, but it's "newer" than the other one, if you get my drift. I doubt that either of them had budded pre "beast", and it was pretty pretty cold here in the Midlands, with three dumpings of snow between just before Xmas and the last one. Hoping we don't get a fourth load over this holiday weekend. I was getting a bit twitchy about the wisteria, because everything else (roses, hydrangeas, etc) are all growing well despite "the beast". You're right, I will keep a check on them, but try not to get too concerned for another few weeks, perhaps another month. Cheers, everyone - and thanks again. Chox.

Mine has started late this year, I was beginning to get worried.. But I’m now getting the fat furry flower buds coming through... I notice you live in the Midlands wheras Im in London..And as i said mine was late this year so dont give up..
