How does one get rid of rats

Just seen a huge one from ny bedroom window when the outside light came on..

Never had to deal with anything like that before..

Your local authority probably has a pest control service that's far cheaper than commercial firms, such as Rentokil. As an example, here's what you'd pay in Norwich:

Alternatively, get a cat!

When we had a rat in the garden, I phoned the council and someone came round and dealt with it without charge.

When I had one in my small garden (I feed the birds), I watched where it went after it had snaffled the birds food and it disappeared down a hole by the back wall. I immediately squirted a whole bottle of bleach down the hole. it never came back again and this was a few years ago now.

If you end up using spring traps, peanut butter is one of the best baits.

My brother got a gun from the local gun shop. Apparently they were very familar with the problem.

A few years ago a neighbour had a rat's nest under his shed. Council pest control came and soon disposed of them. Don't think there was a charge at that time but probably changed since then.

no point in trapping/shooting/bleaching the rat you see unless you take away the benefits to the rat of being there.... control food waste, clear shelter and so on. I keep my garden reasonably rat free by limiting how I feed the birds, beating round the overgrown corners of my garden, sheds and garage and being really careful about how I store and dispose of rubbish. You can get rid of one rat as often as you like but if the food and shelter remain, others will move in. Of course with the current quiet streets and so on and the lack of a food supply from shops, rats, foxes and so on will be getting bolder.

I don't think Council's charge for rat disposal, because they are such a health hazard. They usually do for other pest removal.

My council charges £21.64 each call out for rat control, unless it is affecting a council owned property when it is free.

Every council has different policies so check yours. This is the best solution to a rat problem.

woofgang, like I said, I used the bleach years ago and it - and also others - have never been back, so more than happy with this method actually.

Thank you everyone. I notified our estate manager who is getting pest control round.
I watched it go behind ny husbands shed..we do get a fox occasionally.
