Gardening Suggestions?

I have currently removed a lot of rubble and crap from the back garden and am now at the point where I am to tackle the lawn or what there is of it, currently it is a mix of weeds and grass.

I wanted to have it all grass but how should I go about it, is it wise to turn it all over with a rotavator then weedkiller it then plant new seed or do I use a weedkiller first, then wait for 5 weeks for it all to go if it does then use a rotavator and then plant new seed...also what is a good weedkiller there are so many and I dont want to damage the ground.

I am not very green fingered and really want to tidy it upand have a nice lawn for now.
Any suggestions on how to approach this is appreciated.

I wouldn't do anthing to drastic at the moment,just strim it and mow it, cut the grass every week,it will soon start to improve,after a few weeks apply a "weed & feed" this will help the lawn,but follow the instructions carefully, wait untill next year and see how it looks,I think you will be surprised at the difference in a about 6-8 weeks, good luck, Ray

I'd follow Rays advice, especially the bit about following the instructions carefully. I made a right mess of my lawn by putting extra weed and feed on, someone said to me "All those scientists and experiments to get the balance right and you go and increase the amount" Lesson learnt by me.

when we moved in our gardens were and still are a problem minus the weeds which i sprayed. The problem is witht the various type of grass which grow in the lawn - some grow fast, some grow slow - some are fine, some are coarse and is full of bare patches. Tried weed and feed on it last year and it did for a month or two look better but is now just as bad as it was then. So I asked the advice or a gardener and he said the best option was to spray the lawn with round-up leave it for two weeks then rotavate it and re-seed at the starrt of September.

Would partly agree with woodchopper. Spray liberally with round-up, leave for a fortnight, then rotovate thoroughly, and rake level. Quickest option would be to turf it rather than seed, but unfortunately good turf is in short supply due to heatwave. You could leave till October when there should be better supplies. Problem with seed is that unless you brush or rake it in, birds will have a field-day !
