Radiator Help!
8 Answers
I started renting a property 2 months ago and now that it is getting cooler i thought i would check the heating. When i turn on the heating, the radiators downstairs all work fine and heat up within minutes, however, the upstairs radiators don't seem to be working at all. The settings are all correct on them. Is there something else i have to do? Been trying to get hold of my landlord but can't at the moment. There must be someone in 'the know' out there!

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.It could be that the downstairs radiators are starving the upstairs ones - there are two valves on the radiators, one which you normally regulate with a thermostatic valve( if fitted ) the other you could try closing half way on the downstairs radiators to restrict the flow through them to "push" the water upstairs
( you could also try opening up the "other" valves on the upstairs a bit more ) - another possibility is that there is a motorised /zone valve for the upstairs which might be faulty there is normally a manual overide lever to open them manually -
anyone else any ideas ?

Turn off every downstairs rad then run your heating on full. The upstairs rads should now come on & there was probably an air lock that was blocking the upstairs feed. Then one by one turn on each downstairs rad hopefully the pump will have disslodged the air lock & it will have evacuated the system via the automatic air vent . Try this first if it does'nt work let me know & i will tell you the next steps to take. Good luck Gasman.
Ok if all down stairs rads are off and all up r on & still no joy then next thing is to bleed the upstairs rads. You need a radiator bleed key to open the small bleed vent on each rad if you hear a hiss when you open one of them it is trapped air keep it venting till you get water coming out of the rad. repeat on every cold rad. Keep me posted.
