Laying Carpet

When putting underlay on stairs do I only put the underlay on the step and leave the front?

Well unless your going to be walking on the risers I would say it's a waste of time and money to do so :>)

We have just had new stair carpets fitted and the carpet fitters did put put underlay on the riser as well as the steps. I am not sure why - because as sft42 says you don't walk on the risers, maybe it is to keep the lie of the carpet even??
