Electric Oven Wiring

Thanks for your replies regarding my previous question - http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Home-and-Garden /Question612645.html. Can anyone provide further advice?
The (broken) Belling XOU176SS built-in single oven that I have at the moment is plugged into the mains, however the oven was already in-situ when we moved in. Does it sound like the previous owners added a plug rather than hardwiring it? Behind the oven is a standard double socket, one plug for the oven and one for the dishwasher. There is nothing for the cooker to be hardwired into other than the socket. How would a new oven be hardwired considering everything is built in? Should I just get my existing oven repaired, even though it has a tendency to blow elements and cooks unevenly?
Thanks again peeps!
