Any recommendations for light coloured type of paint for plaster right up to a fireplace - no surround. Concerns re cracking or yellowing.

Standard paints are heatproof so go for a matt or an eggshell that you can wipe down to prvent yellowing. Alternatively try one of the grained paints for a different effect.
