I always start a new ball of yarn at the beginning of a new row. Leave a tail of yarn and just knit away tie the tail of the new ball to a tail from the last yarn then they can be sown into the seam of the garment. If you join new thread in the middle of a row you'll have loads of ends to sew in. Hope this is clear.

That is one way, however, if you have to do in in the middle of a row, just knit a few stitches (2-4) with both the old and the new yarn.

Just make sure, the ends of the two balls face opposite ways, so that when you lay off the old yarn, you can just continue knitting with the new one.

And you don't have any more loose ends than if you do it at the end of a row!

That's how I do it, Bohne, but you do get a bit of a lump where the stitches are doubled.  You have to place it near an edge, next to a cable or somewhere else it won't notice.

If you do knit in three or four stitches like that, you can cut the loose ends off completely.
