With reference to wooden front doors: What are the advantages and disadvantages of oak doors as compared to hardwood, and what woods are used in a door described as "hardwood".?

Oak is hardwood.

Oak is more attractive and will last longer if treated well, doors that are described as hardwood are usually hemlock and is much cheaper and redder in colour . It is all a matter of cost.
Hardwood are from deciduous trees and softwood from evergreens,believe it or not bolserwood is a hardwood!
