Its centuries old but not shown on OS boundary line. The neighbour has cut it back to create a rear vehicle access. I'm in dispute and had to attend a mediation today. The neighbour suggests I abide by OS line and not my hedgerow as our boundary. I do not want HGVs replacing my hedgerow ;(
If I have this right, your neighbour is saying that your hedge has grown till it has crossed the boundary line into their land. If they're right, they can cut it back to the boundary, since it's growing on, or overhanging, their land. In past times, it was very common to dig a ditch to mark a boundary. The only problem with that is that sometimes the line of the bottom of the ditch was the boundary, and sometimes it was the line of the top of the bank of soil made when the ditch was excavated. Don't your deeds say anything about it? Remember that a boundary line has no width to it, so must be on one side or the other of your hedge, or somewhere in the middle of it.
